I created these boots as an art piece for a museum exhibition. They explore and critique the long history of wearing the US Flag on cowboy boots; they ask who sews our flags? Who stitches our boots?

I honor my heroes Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, Ida B. Wells, Ona Judge, Susan B. Anthony, Sacajawea, and every unrecognized woman sewing to support her country.

The crossed needles on the toe bug reference Civil War imagery.

The surnames on the bootstraps reference the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s 1968 sermon "it is a cruel jest to say to a bootless man that he ought to lift himself by his own bootstraps" and how our names are claimed.

This is NOT a design I will replicate for wear.

A welted-construction unisex dress boot built on a 1950 Krentler last, the boots were commissioned for the exhibition "Fashioning America: Grit to Glamour" at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in 2022.
